The People of Kandu

Every person is different. Every story has a unique twist. But each person who comes to Kandu has one thing in common: they want to work but can't find employment on their own. Kandu's wide variety of services and employment support programs helps over 1,200 people each year.

In this special publication, you can read more about how we are building employment opportunities in West Michigan. Here are just a few examples.

Ed started working at Kandu when he was unemployed. He had made some poor decisions and was serving probation. He needed to change his life, but he lacked direction and goals. By working at Kandu, Ed made significant progress with his vocational and social skills. He completed his probation, and grew in maturity. When an on-site opportunity opened up at Sealand in Nunica, Ed worked there with a job coach and a supervisor. His excellent work and dedication have paid off, because Ed has transitioned into a full-time employee of Sealand. Ed has learned that he can make positive changes in his life with hard work and determination.

Jamie came to Kandu through Michigan Rehab. She's an energetic, positive person whose vitality competed with her ability to focus on work. Jamie started with the skill building program at Kandu, learning to keep a schedule and deal with interpersonal issues. She has participated in a wide variety of programs, including off-site work and volunteer support. She has also started working one-on-one with her coworkers as a paid supervisor aide. Jamie has a gift for motivating others and identifying their needs. She has actually helped other people increase their production rates and paychecks through her attention.

Tony held down a full-time job at Nabisco Lifesavers for 13 years. When he was laid off due to a plant closing, he remained unemployed for two years. He struggled with alcoholism, and sank into a downward spiral of depression. Through Michigan Rehab, Tony learned about the Employment Workshop program of Kandu. The staff encouraged and supported Tony, while providing job leads and teaching him interviewing skills. Tony walked a difficult road for another six months before landing a job at Kinkos. Now Tony loves his job, and the customers love Tony!

Beverly has worked at Kandu for 19 years. When she started her career, she was described as aggressive, unfocused, moody, and having a very low tolerance for frustration. Her coworkers were extremely hesitant to even spend lunch with her. The caring team at Kandu, in conjunction with Beverly 's family, has helped her become a cooperative, focused, sharing, friendly person that other people now seek out for lunch! The turnaround has been amazing. Supervisors request her for their work teams because she attends to small details, works hard and works well with others. Beverly also enjoys the opportunity to volunteer, and just genuinely likes to be nice to other people. She has experienced an amazing turnaround in her personal happiness, while also learning skills and doing valuable work.
